The Surface Restaurant & Bar is a rooftop venue located at La Flora Resort right on Patong Beach. La Flora is one of the most popular hotels in Patong with a privileged location and an open-air restaurant overlooking the bay from the third floor, offers great yet affordable dining under the stars.
It‘s best to go early to the Surface Restaurant & Bar as the place is a classy sundowner spot and even though a few trees obscure the views it’s still a wonderful place for sunset. A soft, unobtrusive musical backdrop of Top 40 hits and classics such as ‘The Sound of Silence’ – along with the waves breaking on the beach make the place seem miles away from buzzing Patong City.
The Surface Restaurant & Bar’s terrace covers approximately 400sqm and offers different types of seating: 14 tables can accommodate up to 28 diners, along with half a dozen rectangular and circular durable ersatz water hyacinth sofas with low tables and chaise-lounge-like seating. The terrace is surrounded by a Perspex ‘wall’ which makes for better views out over the beach.
All in all the décor and furniture arrangements are rather Spartan, but it is all well thought out as the most important elements of this restaurant are the sky, the beach and the sea.
The ‘F’ word (fusion) perfectly defines the cuisine at The Surface Restaurant & Bar. Khun Tong, the Executive Chef, is one of the most renowned Thai chefs in Phuket. After having worked for 10 years at the Hilton Arcadia in Karon Beach, he took his position at La Flora in 2012. As an innovative chef he creates new dishes – salmon with turmeric & fresh herbs (390 baht) for instance – which are sampled and reviewed by the restaurant’s guests before being added to the menu, if they are popular that is.

Perhaps not surprisingly, seafood is extremely popular at The Surface: a ‘Seafood Basket’ costs 2,500 baht and contains lobster, squid, white prawns, sea bass (or red snapper), clams, and mussels.
No less than 30 different mocktails (150 baht) and cocktails (230 and 250 baht) are available on the drinks list. Try their signature exotic cocktail, The Surface (vodka, Tia Maria, triple sec, lemon and pineapple juice) it’s delicious.
The wine list is also quite impressive with 41 labels: champagne, sparkling, white and red wines bottles priced between 1,500 baht (Chilean Gato Negro Merlot 2011) and 6,800 baht (French Pascal Jolivet Sancerre Blanc 2008); Champagne is a French Heidsieck Monopole Blue Top Brut priced 8,500 baht. House wines (four choices in red and white) are 240 baht per glass.
Surface Restaurant & Bar is a treat and a great place for special occasions as the venue’s atmosphere has a very romantic touch and it’s perfect for a candlelit dinner under the stars. Happy-go-lucky and cheerful, the wait staff members work hard to make sure everything’s going well at your table.
