Chalk and Cheese (previously Thong Dee Restaurant & Bar) is a world class restaurant hidden on Soi Bangthong, a small street linking the road along Phuket Country Club and the road to Patong Beach next to Patong Go-Kart Speedway. Set in a contemporary style two-storey house in a residential area, the restaurant’s location is rather discreet and resolutely not favourable to attract passing customers; yet, Thong Dee has become one of the most-liked venues in Phuket regarding quality dining, homely-feel atmosphere, and excellent service.
This deserved success is beholden to its owners, Mr Patrik Lundgren and his wife Khun Phonchan Chiarram, whom respectively occupy the position of head waiter and restaurant manager for the former, and of Chef de cuisine, for the latter. Serving home-style Thai, Mediterranean, and Swedish specialities, all dishes are extremely tasty and offer diners an affordable gastronomic experience.

Chalk and Cheese Restaurant harbours a neat and clean stylish interior featuring four distinct dining areas: downstairs a covered front-terrace and a nicely appointed small dining room can host up to 40 people, while the upstairs area hosts a cosy lounge bar with a pool table and a television with a PlayStation allowing children to enjoy themselves while their parents feast. A balcony with eight seats also offers a cool place for private dinners.
The service at Chalk and Cheese is in line with any five-star restaurant in Phuket: Patrik is an affable host who makes his guests feel at ease, passing from table to table assuring that everything is alright and recommending the best wine to accompany each dish, chatting about Phuket and its most interesting places and attractions. He is indeed a lovely man who takes his job at heart, full of attention for his guests.
Concerning food, it is almost impossible to be disappointed here as even classic dishes such as bruschetta crostini (120 baht) or mushroom risotto (250 baht) exhale delectable and surprising flavours. Khun Phonchan blends various influences in her way of cooking to offer unique flavours to the restaurant’s guests; in simple words, it is called talent. These culinary influences cover a wide array of places around the world, from the Chilean and Swedish origins of her husband – try the Swedish meatballs (320 baht) they are to die for – to the Asian and Thai flavours from her personal background. For some fresh seafood, try the salmon pad hed hom (tender salmon filet with fresh shiitake mushrooms, ginger, and spring onion at 350 baht). The variety of ingredients offers an extremely pleasant fusion cuisine experience.
Chalk and Cheese Restaurant in Kathu is just the right place to discover original cuisine in a charming venue. It is not difficult to understand why this restaurant is so often quoted in Phuket despite its off-the-beaten-tracks location after sampling its fine cuisine, and experiencing its unpretentious yet chic atmosphere – as well as the kindness of the owners.
