Sunset is the best time to dine at Tiffin Mama, the signature restaurant of Foto Hotel, directly above Kata Noi Beach in the south of Phuket. The venue has almost exactly the same vistas as the nearby elevated viewpoint along the hilly road between Kata and Nai Harn beaches and they’re absolutely stunning.
With one sweep of the eye you can take in Kata Noi, Kata and Karon beaches as well as the sun-kissed Andaman Sea. The wow factor at Tiffin Mama is zoomed up to maximum.

And it’s the same as you enter the restaurant. Foto Hotel has a black-white-and-red theme running through it and Tiffin duly obliges with dark grey floors, white tables and a dividing ‘wall’ loaded with symmetrical colourful bottles of soy sauce, pestles, silver cans, lunch tiffins, cans of curry, boxes of jasmine tea, large glass jars filled with dry macaroni and spaghetti, tins of Cat Brand tobacco, metal boxes of pepper, and weighing scales – all to great effect.
It really is one of the best decorated restaurants on the island and yet is unique in that its exterior views are just as impressive as the interior. We take our seats just as the sun drops parallel with the hillside, illuminating the colourful displays and minutes later when the lights come on, the adjacent swimming pool lights up and sparkles with its own ever-changing colour display. This place is really something else.
The photo menu is bright and cheerful, with most main dishes on it clocking in at around 220-280 baht. Over by the kitchen stands a wine rack with various bottles from around the world but even though this is an attractive idea, it is also a little misleading as they are ‘dead’ (used) bottles: the actual wine list is modest but adequate and we choose a Chilean red to complement the array of dishes served.
We dine on sea bass fillet on a bed of vegetables and noodles, a delicious seafood phad thai, beef massaman, pork saté, and a local dish of ‘kanom jin’ – thin white rice noodles with garlic, fish and fiery-hot chilies. Ambient music swirls from the speakers and the whole effect here is extremely soothing, especially so when we relax on bean bags outside to enjoy the wine and the cool hillside and sea breezes.
Yes, Tiffin Mama effortlessly complements this attractive and innovative hotel and is certainly a great venue for a special date. There are few restaurants on the island with such a great location and views, not to mention fresh and vibrant cuisine and that very special décor.
