Two Nines Mini Golf Club is a great family activity in its own right and, being located right next to the driving range of Phunaka Golf Course in Chalong, is also an ideal distraction for those who want to while away some time between rounds and serious practise.
The compact course has 18 felt-covered holes, split into the eponymous ‘two nines’ with green felt for the front nine and blue for the more challenging back nine. Avoiding the mini golf clichés of giant windmills and clowns, Two Nines instead has quite a simple design which nonetheless provides some fun obstacles requiring a precise aim. Even if you don’t bring the family along, a round on this course is good for developing your putting skills.

Each hole is very short in length – the longest being no more than about five metres – and all but a couple don’t even have any turns. The challenge comes from narrow gaps requiring precision aiming as well as steep ramps where the trick is gauging the exact amount of clout needed to drop the ball neatly into the hole and not into the net on the other side.
With each hole being so short and yet so challenging, the house rules at Two Nines Mini Golf Club state that you take six shots at each one. If you miss all six, you add a seventh stroke to your scorecard and move on to the next hole. This keeps the pace up, ensuring that groups don’t end up spread all over the course and can keep having fun together. It also keeps the average score below 100 strokes (but only just!) and the average game length below an hour.
A special feature of Two Nines Mini Golf Club, which no other similar establishment on the island has, is a weekly tournament with cash prizes to be won. Held over the course of three months, it is only expatriates and tourists staying for the whole season who are likely to walk away with the 100,000 baht top prize, but the winners from each Saturday’s game can still come away with a certificate.
The Russian owner – Sergei Safronov – told us that the best round played so far was 49 shots while his personal best is 54. The best we managed was 89, with scores of seven (meaning that we missed all six shots) recorded on six holes. If you can beat that, you’re doing well. You will certainly have every opportunity, with the 250 baht entry fee covering you for the full day and with good quality putting clubs available. The one we used had an additional framework on the back, which helped with setting the ball on the clear starting lines without needing to bend down all the time.
Two Nines Mini Golf Club is somewhat out of the way, which may make it impractical if you just want a fun day out with the family. However, for people visiting the Phunaka Golf Course to use the professional-grade facilities, it provides ideal entertainment for those less golf-mad members of the family.
