Descending the wooden stairs to the southern part of Phuket's west-coast Naithon Beach is like walking into a fairyland. Ancient granite boulders line the far ends of the 80-metre white-sand beach; gin-clear water laps up on the shore while gentle breezes tease and caress. You couldn't make this up if you tried, it's that perfect.
This is the venue of Up Beach Club, an outlet of nearby Malaiwana Villas. Up is a decidedly laid-back arrangement, with a dozen tables, a simple Bamboo-lined elevated kitchen and a DJ consul on the sand. The setup is deceptively simple, undermining the fact that a lot of thought has gone into it. But that's an art in itself and, compared with other, flashier, west-coast beach clubs Up certainly accomplishes more with less.
Cool, African-tinged Café del Mar music enhances the groove as the sun goes down and we enjoy chilled rosé while savouring the moment – and the moment is indeed special.
Once dusk has arrived it’s a surprise to discover that attached to the classic-styled parasol is a discreet lamp that affords a sense of privacy to each table and just when we think life couldn’t get better it most certainly does with the arrival at the table of gyoza – Japanese deep-fried dumplings kushi katsu – prawn cutlets on a skewer and tuna tataki – a tartar mix. They’re a clever take on Japanese cuisine and just right for the beach atmosphere at Up. For those hankering after western cuisine there's a whole range of lunch and dinner options to choose from including six salad options, Thai favourites, and 'surf and turf' dishes as well as a full kids' menu so all culinary bases are covered here.
In charge of the proceedings at Up is the very capable Khun Yuth – President of F&B managers in Phuket. The food is remarkably fresh and well executed, with tangy sea flavours and attractive presentation. Up features a full lunch and a separate dinner menu; daily specials are a nice addition and here you can avail yourself of a well-rounded wine list featuring a choice of some 23 worldwide labels that has perhaps the widest-ranging rosé list on the island.
We decide to get naughty and try a Tropical Passion featuring tequila, blue curacao, sour mix and passion fruit along with a Fresh Up – a mix of vodka, water melon and lime. Both are decidedly full-blooded experiences, strong enough to knock the socks off lesser mortals. On a less suicidal note, Up also serves healthy cocktails of fruit and vegetables along with local and imported beers, soft drinks and classic cocktails.
Up is located on the sand from November to May and moves up the hill the rest of the year, away from Phuket’s capricious monsoonal waves but you’ll still get those wonderful west-coast sunsets.
