  • We Café Salad & Coffee in Phuket

Fresh and Healthy Food in Chalong

We Café is a pleasant restaurant and coffee shop located on Chaofa West Road between Phuket Town and Chalong Temple. Opened in October 2012, it stands adjacent to a famous hydroponic farm which has been growing and selling fresh salad and vegetables since 2000 to distribute to Phuket’s many restaurants and hotels.

The success of this environmentally friendly farm led the owner to open We Café, which serves salads, sandwiches, smoothies, coffee and teas as well as hosting a small grocery corner in which salads, fruit and vegetables are sold. ‘Healthy food’ is the motto at We Café and all products are produced according to a strict chart called G.A.P. (Good Agriculture Practices).

  • We Café is a one-storey building with an al-fresco area to its front. At the left of the building stands a large greenhouse in which seven types of salad are cultivated. The total area covered by the greenhouse (which is extended to the back of the restaurant) is 4 Rai (6,400sqm). The salad culture uses a hydroponic system: every few minutes, salads are watered by a mist emitted from pipes installed above them; water goes through a tray filled in with nutrients (gravel, mineral wool, clay or coconut husk) installed right under the plants; then the water is poured again on the plants, charged with nutrients that make them grow.

The restaurant is modern in its shape, with straight lines, bright orange and black walls with compressed wood, and old wooden tables and chairs. Inside, its air-conditioned setup has a separate restaurant and grocery store with an open kitchen at the back. There are eight tables with 24 seats in the al-fresco area and 28 seats inside.

‘Fresh and healthy’ are the best words to describe the food at We Café. Here, you’ll get sandwiches with a choice of five different breads including whole-wheat, croissants, white bread or ciabatta - American breakfast, snacks, and the specialty of the house: salads. Seven types of salads are available - red batavia, cos, butter head, red oak, green oak, red coral and frillice iceberg - with a choice of 31 toppings. Portions are quite large and prices start at 80 baht for salad only without topping, which are charged between five baht – for vegetables, and 50 baht – for grilled salmon (prices April 2013). There’s also a choice of 12 different salad dressings, including six healthy dressings (made from ingredients that impart beneficial effects). We Café plans to extend its menu to other dishes in 2013, adding rice and pasta dishes to it.

The drinks list has lots of coffee options, from mocha to cappuccino to espresso, as well as tea, cocoa, Italian sodas and smoothies. The grocery store sells fruit and vegetables grown according to the G.A.P. rules from farms located around Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. Prices are fair considering the products’ quality.

Summing up, We Café is recommendable for many reasons, from the freshness and quality of its food to the strict environmentally friendly ethics of its products – a company with a great vision for the future.
