Cocktail, Wine and Champagne Lounge in Phuket Old Town

NOTE: Wonderland Phuket is now closed.

Wonderland Phuket is the latest addition to Phuket Old Town’s bustling nightlife scene. It’s a classy cocktail and champagne lounge setup on Yaowarat Road in one of the vintage shop-houses which make up and give this charming and retro feeling in the Sino-Portuguese district of downtown Phuket. Setting foot in Wonderland Phuket is like stepping back in time or entering down a rabbit hole, with its red walls, Victorian-era chandeliers, stylish antiques and reproduction furniture, comfortable cushioned armchairs, beautifully-shaped mirrors – the décor and design here is well thought out and displays a lot of taste.

Wonderland and its immediate neighbourhood may look classic but the concept behind it all is rather modern: every evening of the week, Wonderland Phuket is an affordable venue serving skillfully mixed cocktails, champagnes and wine with unobtrusive and soft Jazz music (French classics give a St Germain des Prés touch). It’s definitely a place for friendly or business conversation. On Saturdays, and on a monthly basis, invited Chefs from other restaurants come for a showcase-like dinner and prepare original dishes for diners in a special event/party atmosphere. Now ain’t that original?

  • The brainchild of five young and creative Phuket entrepreneurs: Marine Lucchini and Thibault Spithakis (Chalong Bay Rum), Brian Woulfe, along with Khun Lek and Khun Noi; the main idea of Wonderland Phuket is to host and entertain guests in a stylish venue at affordable rates. It is the cheapest place to drink champagne in Phuket (prices start at 2,650 baht for a bottle of Delamotte Brut), and the average cocktail price is 220 baht.

The place and its neighbourhood may look classical, but the atmosphere of the place shows a slight ‘grain de folie’, slightly crazy side with waiters in top hats, and the party-going feel goes off the map after a certain hour when the managers don rabbit outfits, ‘30s Charleston costumes, or Brazilian carnival getups. Only Ka Jok See restaurant in Phuket Town has a rather similar concept but in a Thai atmosphere and without the mad costumes.

Wonderland Phuket has a long list of quality beverages. Signature and classic cocktails are perfectly mixed with the best ingredients – sample a reinvented Mojito made with Chalong Bay Rum and you’ll understand what I mean. Spirits are served in 2oz glass or by a 12oz set which includes 12oz of spirits, four mixers and ice. Belgian beers, wines (just ask for their current selection) are also on the drinks list.

When it comes to food, precise description is impossible as the cuisine styles and menus are totally ‘out-of-the-box’ and planned to change on a monthly basis. Each month, a different Chef is invited to prepare an original and unique weekly dinner (on Saturdays) that you’ll need a reservation to attend. Wonderland Phuket is also a perfect place to organize private parties and dinners and whether they’re anniversaries, business meetings or wedding parties, you can be assured that things will get done in style with top-end quality. Summing up, Wonderland Phuket offers a different experience to customers in an intimate place to chill out and relax.
