| Phang Nga Bay National
Marine Park, set in the Andaman Sea (southern Thailand) and home of the infamous James
Bond Island, boasts some of the world's great scenic wonders. Phang Nga is renowned for
its amazing limestone "sea mountains" (called "karsts") that rise from
the ocean as vertical walls; and for its scores of fascinating yet naturally sculptured
islands - with some peaks reaching 300m. Few islands are inhabited and the bay is largely untouched
by human hand. Hidden in these islands are numerous caves; tunnels and lagoons - better
known as "hongs" (Thai for room); collapsed caverns eroded by natural
forces over millions of years that can only be entered via tunnels when the tide is just
right. And best of all . . .
This little-seen world of caves,
tunnels and "hongs" can be explored safely with us.
Tunnels that lead to the
lagoons have been known by Thai fishermen for hundreds of years, but none dared enter the
tunnels, which were to the locals the "home of the spirits". Karsts support an
intriguing array of flora and fauna uniquely adapted to life in the demanding conditions.
The unique vegetation supports many species of birds and primates.
